We were devasted to learn that Dylan had a hearing loss when he failed his newborn hearing screening in Florida in 2002. I don't even remember the drive home that day from the audiologist. I do recall that it was a typical day for her- but not for me or my husband.
I remember my daughter, Megan, who is 15 months older than Dylan, sitting on my lap in the "booth" playing with a toy. "I'm a Little Teapot" was playing and Megan just kept playing with that toy in her hand. She didn't look to the sound.
What a kick in the gut. Dylan had a hearing loss and we put hearing aids on him- but how could we miss my daughter's hearing loss? What kind of parent was I to not notice an 18-month-old not talking???
Fast forward to 2004- both Megan & Dylan received their first Nucleus Cochlear implant & within 5 months received their second.
Both children were successful and able to mainstream into public school before kindergarten, thanks to the cochlear implant and to Clarke Jacksonville School for Hearing & Speech.
In th Summer of 2010, we relocated to Denver, Colorado and our family enjoyed this new adventure. We made new friends, hiked and went skiing. However, we deperately missed our family and support system--- so in June 2013-- we're back in Jacksonville, Florida!!!
Thanks to Cochlear Americas and the many medical professionals along the way, our children are living every possible opportunity.
We help others receive the miracle of Cochlear technology and want to meet other families who have Nucleus and Baha implants. If you are looking for answers, we offer hope.
