I was diagnosed with Meniere's in 1987 on the right side. In 1996 the vertigo became unmanageable and the hearing loss so great that I underwent a labyrinthectomy. I have tolerated tinnitus on that deaf side since beginning the Meniere's. Following surgery it increases when I am in noisy environments, and I now find that I am hyperacussive.
I am now bilateral Meniere's, but have been able to control the episodes with an extremely low sodium diet. A new Dr. suggested that even though I have some hearing loss in my only side I am a candidate for the BAHA.
I've lived with the single-sided deafness for quite a while, and have sort of learned to accommodate, but it is socially restricting, and I am losing my tolerance to it. I'm investigating the BAHA but am concerned that it could aggrevate the tinnitus and/or hyperacussivity. I do not want to do anything that could cause that to increase.
Perhaps someone can answer what the BAHA community has experienced in this regard. I understand that each individual has unique responses to sound. But I am looking to make an informed decision. Thank you, Grammy P
