Northwestern University “Beyond Hearing Aids: Implantable Hearing Technology – Collaborative Strategies for Professionals”.

I had a wonderful opportunity to participate in a small forum tonight at Northwestern University “Beyond Hearing Aids: Implantable Hearing Technology – Collaborative Strategies for Professionals”. I obviously was there to share my experiences as a CI recipient and upcoming bilateral implant scheduled for next month. Mine was a small contribution; however, it felt great to give back to the professionals and Cochlear Americas for the life changing technology I have benefited from.

Tonight provided me with many new insights relating to the science of implants, the medical procedures, and the ongoing research in this area. The one actionable item I walked away with is that there are hundreds of thousands whom are candidates for this technology that are not pursuing it; maybe lack of knowledge, a little fear, disbelief that there may be a better solution, or the belief that hearing aids are good enough. I felt all of those until it was painfully apparent that there had to be a better way. With some gentle nudging from some great audiologist I took the next step.

For those of you whom are already recipients, please be vocal about your successes. Those who are curious; please talk to an audiologist, ENT, and/or one of us of this growing community.

P.S. The new Series 5 looks great and is full of exciting features: can't wait to have the working model installed in October!
