My Story
My son was born in January 2005. The hospital did the newborn hearing screen and he passed. When Max was 12 mos. old I knew that something was not right. He was not saying any words. By the time we got into a local ENT, my son was 14 mos. The ENT stated that Max had fluid in his ears, and that he would get tubes put in. Max had tubes put in his ears in April. When we went to the check-up, I again told the doctor that I still didn't think something was right. He told me not to worry, that he was a boy, he was the second child, his older sister was doing all the talking for him. Luckily I didn't take that answer and scheduled an appointment with a Pediatric Development doctor. The only problem was that we couldn't be seen until August and it was May. At the time I was worried that my son had some type of autism, or Pervasive Developmental Delays. I never would have guessed that he couldn't hear. Evenutally I got our Early Intervention Providers to come and do an evaluation and found out that they believed that he had a hearing loss. I was shocked! I had a certificate from the hospital from when he was born that said he could hear. Thus the long process of checking his hearing, hearing aid trial, etc. Max finally had surgery in May 2007 at the age of 27 mos. at Kosair's Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY with Dr. Gadre. He was activated May 25th and I will never forget that day. How Awesome!!! Since that time Max has made tremendous progress. Every day I thank God for the miracle of letting my son hear. I let everyone we meet who asks "What's that?" know how lucky we are to have this miracle and how I get see miracles every day.
