Sensitivity

Hi. Can anyone please explain to me exactly what sensitivity is and how it interacts with volumn. I know I will find out on A day, but I am trying to learn all I can about processors before then. Thanks. Joyce

The volume control, as you know, increases/decreases the volume of the sound. The sensitivity relates to the distance of the sound from you. Sensitivity would need to be less the closer the sound is, and, conversely, increased the further away the sound becomes. Your audi and your manual will cover this in much more detail.

Yep, as Stuart said, it's about the distance of the sound. The general rule in the manual is that the sensitivity should be set low when you're in a noisy environment, and high when you're in a quiet environment. You will probably play around with it often, to find the best level for the situation you're in. The other morning, I turned on my processors and instantly heard voices. But I was home alone. Strange. When I opened the front door, I realised it was my neighbors talking in their front garden. I turned the sensitivity down after that!

Joyce another way to think about this is that Sensitivity helps you pick up the softest sounds at the greatest distance. Think of it as a bubble around you. The bubble needs to be big to pick up those quieter sounds far away - so you raise the Sensitivity, say from 5 to 8. But as Stuart says, it operates like a see saw with Volume. So in the example, if Volume was on 8 then turn it down to 5. The measure of up/down for each does not have to be exactly the same. That's the beauty of the remote control, you can make adjustments as needed. Experimenting is the best way to learn. Good luck! Ellen

Joyce, This is a great question and I'm glad you asked. Since I have only been activated for less then three weeks I am still playing with my remote to get the best sound for the situation I am in at the time. Stuart, Daniela and Ellen have all given some good information that will help you and me as we become more proficient in the use of our remote and processor. Wayne

I like to talk on my cellphone when I'm walking my dog. I turn the sensitivity down so that I can hear the person on the phone, but not the cars driving by and other dogs barking behind the fence. When I don't turn the sensitivity down, I have a hard time understanding the person on the phone with the background noise.

Joyce, everyone covered sensitivity. Sometimes you have to adjust it with the volume. Each ear may also be different.

Thanks to all of you. I think I uderstand it prettty well now. I have had many different programs, accessories, etc. with my hearing aids, but nothing that sounds this exciting. I have always enjoyed "playing" with them. I am anxious to get sarted now. Just 6 more days!

This is a comment for MaryTexas, I'm wondering why you don't have as one of your programs an M/T combination, say about 33% for the mic and 66% for the t-coil or even 50/50. I prefer 1/3-2/3 combo (I know those aren't the exact figures, but close.) You will easily be able to hear on the cell phone while being aware of environmental sounds.
