Embarrassing Cochlear Moment

Today I had an important meeting, complete with teleconferencing participants, for a large court project that I co-chair. While I was explaining a procedure, my rechargeable battery went DEAD. I abruptly stopped my presentation, saying "My battery went dead," and continued my speech while I reached in my pocket and retrieved and secured a disposable battery pack into the processor. The other co-chair asked me a question before I could get the processor restarted, and my supervisor (who just happened to sit in on the meeting today) responded for me! Then, I was "on air" again and picked up where I left off. We barely skipped a beat in the meeting whew! My supervisor and I have worked closely recently on some issues for this project, so she knew my answer to that question!

I am bilateral but my Freedom processor for the new implant (activated 3/08) had to be returned to the factory due to recurring H5 corrupt program errors, so I am functioning solely with Thing 1 until Cochlear repairs or replaces it.

Guess I did well overall in the meeting. I've been at this court for 22 years and everyone has been very patient and understanding with my hearing impairment. They are all so very impressed with cochlear implants

Don't feel embarrassed! Changing batteries is a good way for others to see just how much our cochlear implant helps us. I've had people come up to me after moments like that and just be blown away by how deaf I am and what a difference the cochlear implant makes! with cochlear implant joy, MargoK

Margo, you are so right! However, they rarely see the deaf Sheila at work. Since my first implant in 1995 (in my 11th year at this court), I think they kinda forgot I was deaf. Some good in that ha ha!

The pressure was on with the teleconferencing participants! Kudos to you for keeping your cool and smoothly picking up where you left off.
