I have been Hearing Impaired all my life (nerve deafness, they said at the audiologist) , a teacher noticed when I was 10, because I could hear "sounds" my parents did nothing and I did not get evaluated . I quit school at 16 because I was always being sent to the office for " not paying attention". Even telling them I didn't hear them or I couldn't understand what they were saying didn't alter my " detention" time.
I have gotten my GED and furthered my education on my own time and I probably benefitted from the choice to "quit" as I have developed visual skills and perceptions to aid in an auditory world. Word comprehension has always been a problem, now it has worsened to the point that I am thinking Cochlear. I'm excited about the information I've been reading on the Freedom Nucleus 5. I have an evaluation scheduled Oct 5th.
Four years ago my audiologist Susie R. ~ suggested I get in touch with the The HLA of Knoxville ( SHHH at the time ) . This group has been such a blessing to me, it has opened my "ears and eyes" to a world of wonderful people, that understand the idiosyncracies of hearing loss
I am truly excited after reading about the Freedom Nucleus 5 and the music enhancement ~ In my world ~ Music ~ is the air I breathe~ the song I dance to ~ the gift that God gave me that allows me to play music at nursing homes for the wonderful people there. Without music I would not be "me". I will ask a million questions , I'm sure !!
On Oct 5th 2009 I was accepted as an Implant recipient and given a surgery date of Dec 31,2009
Update ~ Oct 19th Surgery date Dec 31st cancelled ~ Will get a new date after predetermiation.
FYI Having the Dr ordered ~ VNG test the 18th of Nov~ http://www.stopdizziness.com/services_vng.asp I don't have any dizziness ~~
I believe all went well with the test , I have another appt Dec 7th to meet with the Dr and see what the results were , I believe. Also waiting for insurance approval

Update Feb 17th More progress understanding all conversation, added Music program and 3 more training levels. love the CI On a roll !!!
Update May 2010 Walk 4 Hearing 5 K in Chattanooga ~~ people that knew me before my CI were so surprised at my ability to communicate ~ so was I heheeh!
Update June 2010 traveled around for 20 days and I attended HLAA convention in Milwaukee and was so amazed at my word comprehension even in crowds and noisy areas. It was so much fun meeting so many from this community.
Update Sept 2010 Oh how I love my CI , Love doing 5 K walks and races, benefits, Love being able to CONFIDENTLY participate in life for the first time is 20 or 25 years .
Update Oct 29, 2010 scored 88% on words in test booth and 100% on sentences ~~ WOW !!! I'm thrilled. Also got the Zoom update ~it's amazing
Update~ Jan. 29 2011 ~ scored 96 % on words and 100 % on sentences ~
Update ~ attended the Cochlear Celebration on Orlando ~ Feb 2011 ~ was amazed at how much comprehension I had in a noisy environment~ with the Zoom technology in Noise channel , sure didn't miss much ~~ LOL .
Update ~ Nov. 6th 2011 over this past spring and summer I was aware that my residual hearing was so bad that I wouldn't miss it going bilateral. I have felt the " calling " to go forward with it by the "signs' prayers and talking to friends I called the Dr in August 2011 got and appt for Sept 16th as Dr M said I was a good candidate. After meeting with him the gave me a surgery date of 3 weeks later ~ I was surprised as the first one took almost 3 mos. Naturally I said "go for it " as it turned out Fall break was the week following the surgery so I had that week to recuperate ~~ It's amazing being bilateral after 2 weeks activation!
Update ~ July 14th 2012 this amazing journey continues ~I'm finding that 8 mos ( Oct 25th 2011 ) after bilateral activation new doors are opening, new sounds are being heard, word discrimination is better, it has given me directionality, better music comprehension, and paying it forward is so very rewarding !! For so long I knew nothing about the possibility if hearing restoration, to have learned of this group and the HLAA was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. To be able to hear as I've NEVER heard is such a blessing and a most remarkable miracle !!
MArch 2015 ~ Updated to the N6 in January, was able to get it programmed before the Cochlear Celebration ~ Whoohooo ~ I LOVE it ~ sharpness, clarity better comprehension ( is that possible ???? ) will see ~ have mapping scheduled for both the 21st of April 2015 , will let you know the results ~~ Take Care ~~ I"m listening to all the birds and critters~ Life is great in a hearing world !!! ~~
