No one knows for sure but I was most likely born hard of hearing. When I was in the second grade the nurse at my school thought I should have my hearing checked as I showed signs of not hearing. At that time it was discovered that I had about 50% loss in both ears. When I was 18 I woke up one morning and was completely deaf. When I was 28 I got my first hearing aid which gave me some environmental sounds. In October of 2006 I was having trouble with my HA whistling and went to have it re-tubed. The young man mentioned to me that I should consider a Cochlear implant and from that moment on I have been on the most amazing adventure. I was implanted on Jan. 18, 2007 and activated Feb. 18. I can hear words without speech reading, birds, music, kitchen appliances, cars and so much more.
I had my second implant surgery Feb. 20, 2008 and will be hooked up March 19. Oh boy, I can not even imagine what it will be like but what fun it will be!
