Tenth Anniversary of First CI today, November 22nd

November 22, 2010
posted by  Karen K.

Ten years ago today, I was implanted with my first CI the day before Thanksgiving. It seems like yesterday in remembering back. The surgery went very well with the implant array just "slipping right in."

On Thanksgiving Day ten years ago, I managed to have Thanksgiving dinner with the rest of the family but had to chew carefully bite-sized pieces of turkey and other foods. After that, I took pain pills and laid down on my sister's waterbed upstairs. Needless to say, I couldn't sleep very well because of the waterbed gently rolling whenever I moved even a little. Note to everyone--waterbeds are not a good idea right after CI surgery.  (I should have just laid on the couch downstairs...)

My upcoming tenth anniversary of my CI activation on December 20th is another milestone. I've come a long way since then! I understand 99.99% of what people say in person, very often without lip-reading.

For several years after the CI surgery, my sister would set out a special celebration plate for me for Thanksgiving, and we would all remember and celebrate this special occasion. My family still raves to this day about the positive effects of the CI on relationships and communications in the family. I never realized the full extent of my hearing loss's effect on my family until after the CI.

I just had a CI mapping this morning on this 10th anniversary. My audiologist upon being told said that was wonderful to remember it today. She said the Nucleus 24 is a "very, very good implant", even with the Freedom and the Nucleus 5 implants here today with their improvements and advances. The integrity testing today shows the N24 Contour implant in great form with no problems whatsoever.

Here's to many more wonderful years of hearing! Thank you, Cochlear!

Fantastic! Now I know what you mean about looking back this time of year and being thankful. It slounds as if we had a very similar experience on our post-surgery Thanksgiving. I hope I'm doing as well as you in 10 years.

Thank you very much for all your comments! I should elaborate on the 99.99%. The 99.99% refers to conversations I have with others, including complicated in person computer program design meetings. Overhearing when I am working on something else isn't 99.99%, though. (Multi-tasking is not what it is cracked up to be, at least for me.) I'm understanding a lot, but not 99.99% on phone group conference calls; I still have a ways to go, and the phone is simply harder due to its nature. Still, 99.99% with in person conversations with others is wonderful!
