Happy Spring!

My name is Lynne and I have volunteered to be co-host of this group.

I am also a member of the RI Hearing Loss Associaltion and receive many email updates that I can pass along to you here within this group. Below are some upcoming events in and around RI.

This is a new experience for me. Please feel free to offer suggestions/feedback on ways to make this group work.

The RI Hearing Loss Assoc (RI-HLA) meet every month. Their next meeting is scheduled for May 21st 1:30-3:30 at the Warwick Public Library and there will be CART available. Beth Wilson is the scheduled speaker and she will talk about Coping Strategies; How to deal with your hearing loss in a variety of public places.

Also, the 3rd Annual Hearing Loss Expo will be held on Thurs., May 19th from 11am-3pm, located at the Atrium at the Dept of Administration, 1 Capital Hill in Providence. This Expo is to help celebrate Better Hearing and Speech month.

The HLA of Central Mass. is extending an invitation to HLA-RI for their May meeting. Event is "Cochlear Implants: Everything you wanted to know about Cochlear Implants but were afraid to ask." This will be held on Sat., May 7th from 2-4 at the Northboro Public Library. 34 Main St., Northboro, MA 01532. It will include a panel of 5 HOH individuals who were implanted and will share their experiences.  There will be CART.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Easter holiday and Happy Spring. Again, please feel free and let me know if you have any ideas/suggestions/feedback re: this group. We are a small state so we can be helpful/supportive to one another as we all go through the CI journey. Take care everyone and hope to hear back from you!

Hi Lynne, Are there regular meetings or events that HLA-RI hold? I am looking for a support group that I don't have to travel over an hour to attend. I have a child w/hearing loss who is bi-lateral with the N5. Jenn

Hi Jenn, I called Hasbro/RI Hospital Audiology & Speech Dept. as they now do CIs in children in RI and had to leave a msg & asked them to call me back if they know of any support groups in RI I will write back if I have new info. There are meetings that HLA-RI holds but not sure if they focus on children with hearing loss. I can check for you and get back to you on that as well. You can also try and contact AG Bell @ www.agbell.org and email them and see if there is anything in RI ( I can also try too; they have free parent membership for the 1st 6 months). I will look further and see how I can help but off the top of my head there are not much out there for parents of children with hearing loss. Let's stay in touch and see what we can come up with. I would like to know because even though I am hearing impaired with a CI, I also work in Early Intervention and have worked with children with hearing loss so it would be good to know too. Take care and stay cool and we can stay in touch. Lynne

Hi! Good news!! There is a group for parents of HOH children. Here is the link http://www.riagbell.org/ The president is Iraida Williams and has a daughter who has CI and Iraida is a terrific parent and advocate. The contact information is on the website! Jordan Sack is the VP and is CI kid himself! He is in his second year of Brown Medical School-his parents were terrific advocates for Jordan as he was born with a severe hearing loss. I would love to here back from you and let me know how you make out. If there is anything else I can help with please let me know and I will continue to search for you. Good luck and stay cool! Lynne
